Since its inception as the College of Engineering in 1945, the School of Engineering and Applied Science has been on the cutting-edge of technological advances.
In addition to the school's strengths in traditional engineering programs such as aerospace, electrical engineering and computer science, it is advancing research in the evolving fields of biomedical engineering, wireless communications and networking, and micromachines. Researchers are also creating innovative methods of handling increasing Internet traffic and imaginative uses of new materials.
The School continues to attract leading faculty and exceptional students from around the world, and offers more than 30 academic and professional degree programs as well as an interdepartmental graduate degree in biomedical engineering. In addition to basic science, the curriculum includes significant exposure to the humanities, social sciences and fine arts to educate students about their responsibility to create, protect and manage technology with regard for ethics and human values.

1997-‘98 MILESTONES INCLUDE:
Under the leadership of Electrical Engineering Professors William J. Kaiser and Gregory J. Pottie, UCLA is pioneering single-chip radios and networks. When placed inside a computer, these devices will allow users to stay "seamlessly linked to the Internet," no matter where they are.
Using an inkjet printer, Associate Professor Yang Yang, in the Materials Science Department has developed a method of printing with a polymer material. By applying an electrical current, he can make the words and images light up like an illuminated sign. The device has immediate applications in the advertising and novelty industries and may eventually rival both liquid crystal displays and the new flat-screen monitors.
Lixia Zhang, an Associate Professor of Computer Science, is working on a way to eliminate "hot spots" caused when millions of Web users try to access the same data. The problem is expected to increase in frequency and magnitude as the Web continues to grow. Zhang's scalable solution is Adaptive Web Caching. Instead of always fetching pages from the originating source, the nearest interactive cache would fill the request. Caches would automatically create themselves when necessary and dismantle themselves when no longer needed.
