The UCLA School of Medicine provides leadership and fosters excellence in biomedical research, teaching, patient care and community service. Founded in 1951, it is among the youngest of the nation's medical schools. The School is now rated 12th out of 125 U.S. medical schools in overall excellence.
     Among the School's strengths is the diversity of experience provided to students. The main teaching hospital is the UCLA Medical Center, a 668-bed tertiary-care facility that is ranked fourth in the nation. Students also train at UCLA's network of affiliated teaching facilities which includes county, Veterans Administration and private hospitals, homeless clinics and senior citizen homes.
     The School's progressive curriculum is continually evolving along with changes in medicine and medical practice. The Doctoring Curriculum, for example, allows students to interact with patients from their first day of medical school and to examine social issues such as drug abuse, homelessness and access to care.
     Also affiliated with the School and medical center are research institutes and clinical centers that include the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, the UCLA AIDS Institute, the UCLA Brain Research Institute, the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute and Hospital and the Stein Eye Research Centers.

1997-‘98 MILESTONES INCLUDE:
The Gonda (Goldschmied) Neuroscience and Human Genetics Research Center opened on the UCLA medical campus. The state-of-the-art facility was made possible through a single gift of $45 million from Leslie and Susan Gonda, and represents the largest single gift ever made to a U.C. campus.
A gift of $25 million from Mattel Corporation has established the Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA. The funds will support the creation of a highly advanced yet child-centered facility within the new UCLA Medical Center
Donations from the Ahmanson Foundation, the Pierson-Lovelace Foundation, and the Tamkin Foundation, among many others, have funded construction of the UCLA Ahmanson-Lovelace Brain Mapping Center and Tamkin Functional Imaging Wing. The center, the only one of its kind in the world, will function as a think-tank for leading neuroscientists to test hypotheses and confer with other experts.
