Modern technological society is built on the Physical Sciences. The division’s five departments present the results of mankind’s efforts to understand the physical aspects of the natural sciences, which include the study and understanding of the properties and characteristics of matter and energy; the science of numbers and order; the studies of the origin and structure of the universe, solar system and Earth; and climatic changes. In addition, there are two interdepartmental programs. The gamut of research topics pursued in the division range from developing mathematical models of the global climate and studying the strength and distribution of the Northridge earthquake aftershocks to learning about the fault structure under the Los Angeles basin and observing newly born galaxies at the edge of the universe.

Studies in physical sciences are experimental, theoretical and observational. The bases for the Physical Sciences are the fundamental laws of mathematics, chemistry and physics. Key to the division’s success is the faculty’s commitment to a broad program of curricular reform which, when completed, will expose undergraduates to an integrated core of courses where most of the old interdisciplinary boundaries will be absent. Coupled with this has been a strong effort to engage students early on and as fully as possible in one of the myriad research programs being carried out in one of the five departments, the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics or the Institute of Plasma Fusion Research.
