Honors and Undergraduate Programs has two principal functions: to stimulate curriculum innovation across the College and to provide academic-support services that are linked closely to academic programs. The division sponsors six major programs: General Education, Honors, Orientation, Counseling, Tutorials and Academic Advancement. General Education provides a common set of courses designed to introduce freshmen and sophomores to the richness and diversity of academic fields in the arts and humanities, social sciences, and math, sciences and technology. The Honors Program sponsors the Honors Collegium, in which interdisciplinary seminars challenge the brightest undergraduates through close student-faculty interactions, and the Student Research Program, which provides undergraduates with a rich array of opportunities to work individually with faculty on research and scholarly projects. Orientation welcomes new freshmen and transfer students and introduces them to academic and student life at UCLA. Counseling and Tutorial programs encourage students progress towards the degree by assisting them in the selection of courses and majors, and provides opportunities for students to design appropriate learning strategies and develop analytical and critical thinking skills. The Academic Advancement Program offers an integrated series of counseling, mentoring and tutoring experiences that assist UC-eligible students who historically have the lowest retention and graduation rates to be successful at UCLA. |
