The UCLA School of Dentistry, established in 1960, is a nationally recognized center of excellence in dental education, research and patient care. Enrollment is 350 predoctoral students and 100 dental residents and postdoctoral students. Admission to the School is extremely competitive. Each year, 88 students are accepted from more that 1,600 applicants. Once admitted, the rigorous academic curriculum explores the clinical, biological and behavioral aspects of dentistry, with an emphasis on the comprehensive diagnosis and systemic treatment of oral disease.
Despite its relative youth, the School ranks among the best of the nation's 52 dental schools in the federal funds received for research, and is a leader in oral cancer, bone biology, wound healing, gene therapy, biomimotics, and dental health services research. The School also houses the Dental Research Institute, an organized research unit of the University of California and a focal point for multi-disciplinary research in the health sciences.
The School operates a 200-chair dental clinic on-campus, the Wilson-Jennings-Bloomfield UCLA Venice Dental Center, The UCLA/ROYBAL Children's Dental Center in East Los Angeles, and the UCLA/USC Mobile Dental Clinic. At the Venice and Roybal clinics, low-cost comprehensive care is provided to low-income or indigent residents of Los Angeles. Patients visits for all clinics number over 80,000 per year.
