UCLAs Division of Continuing Education, comprised principally of UCLA Extension and Summer Sessions, has been serving Greater Los Angeles with distinction since 1917. Among the most highly regarded programs in the world, UCLA Extension is also the largest single-campus program of continuing higher education in the nation, with nearly 105,000 enrollments from more than 4600 courses and programs, taught by some 2500 instructors drawn from various professional communities and the faculty. Summer Sessions is the largest such program in the Western U.S., enrolling about 10,500 undergraduate and graduate students in 1998, who took an average of nearly two courses each. Summer Sessions consists of established UCLA courses taught by UCLA faculty. Extensions reputation derives in large measure from its original curricula, in certificated and intensive programs in arts and design, entertainment studies, creative writing, global trade and commerce, real estate, digital image creation, advanced technologies, paralegal studies, information systems, and manufacturing engineering. Such courses are generally taught by expert practitioners, highly regarded in their professional fields. Extension is also renowned for series of high-level conferences in subjects ranging from public policy transportation and development issues, early childhood education, to hotel industry investment, and for its public service programs that disseminate UCLA faculty research to the broader constituencies of the university. Extension programs are held at UCLA, and as part of its historic mission of outreach to all of Southern California, in metropolitan centers in downtown L.A., Santa Monica, Westwood, and at Universal CityWalk. Many conferences and classes are also held in school, governmental, and industry sites throughout the county, and upon demand, in cities across the Americas, Europe, and Asia as well. While the clear majority of Summer Sessions classes are held at UCLA, a significant number also include faculty-led courses abroad. |
