The UCLA School of Medicine provides leadership and fosters excellence in biomedical research, teaching, patient care and community service.  Founded in 1951 and among the youngest of the nation's medical schools, UCLA ranks in the top 10 in research, patient care and education. In fact, this past year UCLA’s School of Medicine ranked seventh in the nation in the amount of National Institutes of Health support to U.S. medical schools.

The School emphasizes diversity of experience to its students. The main teaching hospital - UCLA Medical Center, a 668-bed tertiary-care facility - is consistently rated as the best hospital in the western United States in a survey prepared by U.S. News & World Report. Students also train at UCLA's network of affiliated teaching facilities, which include county, Veterans Administration and private hospitals, homeless clinics and senior citizen homes.

The School's progressive curriculum continually evolves along with changes in medicine and medical practice. The Doctoring Curriculum, for example, allows students to interact with patients from their first day of medical school and to examine social issues such as drug abuse, homelessness and access to care.

Many nationally recognized research institutes are present at the School of Medicine - the Jonsson Cancer Center, the UCLA AIDS Institute, the UCLA Brain Research Institute, the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute, the Jules Stein Eye Institute, the Crump Institute for Molecular Imaging, the DOE Laboratory of Structural Biology and Molecular Medicine, and the Mental Retardation Research Unit.

zpinbl.gif (960 bytes)    In FY 2000, Medical Sciences Development raised more than $151 million from private donors, corporations and foundations.
zpinbl.gif (960 bytes)    Major gifts in FY 2000 include a $23-million contribution for UCLA Medical Sciences from anonymous donors; a $3- million gift from the Leslie and Susan Gonda (Goldschmied) Foundation and The Gonda Family Foundation to establish a Robotic Surgery Center at UCLA; and more than $6 million in new contributions to name facilities in the new Replacement Hospital.
zpinbl.gif (960 bytes)    UCLA Medical Sciences will administer a new three-year statewide prostate cancer treatment program, funded with $50 million from the State of California. The new program, called IMPACT: Improving Access, Counseling and Treatment for Californians with Prostate Cancer, will help uninsured men with prostate cancer receive critical medical care.  The UCLA Department of Urology will manage IMPACT and subcontract with regional sites to coordinate care.
zpinbl.gif (960 bytes)   The lung cancer program at UCLA's Jonsson Cancer Center has been designated a Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) by the National Cancer Institute, making it one of six programs nationwide to receive national recognition and substantial research funding. The SPORE designation comes with a five-year, $13.9-million grant that recognizes UCLA's lung cancer program as one of the best in the country.
