The College includes four academic divisions -- Humanities, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and Social Sciences -- which span research and teaching in the liberal arts and sciences. Within the academic departments are members of the National Academy of Sciences and other academic societies, Guggenheim Fellows, Fulbright Scholars and Donald Cram and Paul Boyer, the 1987and 1997 Nobel Prize winners for Chemistry, respectively.
Also within the College are the Division of Honors and Undergraduate Programs, and International Studies and Overseas Programs (ISOP). The degree programs are designed to expose students to a variety of intellectual challenges by combining a wide distribution of courses and the opportunity to specialize in one particular field.
In addition, the College houses research centers and programs spanning the sciences and the liberal arts. They link faculty from many departments in their research and teaching of interdisciplinary subjects.
2000-‘01 MILESTONES INCLUDE:
Acceptance
of a $4- million pledge from the LaKretz Family Foundation for the
construction of a new three-story building on the Court of Sciences, to
include a 350-seat lecture hall for Life Sciences classes and the
administrative home of the Institute of the Environment
UCLA chemist James Heath and scientists at
Hewlett-Packard received a patent for a method that describes how to build
a memory device from switchable molecules sandwiched between grids of
nanometer-scale wires, a process named one of the top five patents of the
year by the journal Technology Review.
A team of nine UCLA researchers led by Elinor Ochs,
professor of anthropology and applied linguistics, received a $3.6-million
grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to begin a landmark study that
will document life in middle-class American families. The project is being conducted under the auspices of the
newly established UCLA/Sloan Center on Everyday Lives of Families (CELF),
which is devoted to detailed, ethnographic research on middle-class
families and home life.
UCLA marked the 75th anniversary of the donation by
William Andrews Clark Jr. of his library to the university.
The William Andrews Clark Memorial Library, located in Los Angeles'
West Adams District, is a key research asset for UCLA's Center for
Seventeenth- & Eighteenth-Century Studies.
