The broad array of fields within the Life Sciences brings together an extraordinary range of interests, from research and teaching about the smallest biological object to the most formidable physical phenomenon on Earth. At one extreme, molecular biologists explore the three-dimensional structure of atoms while in the same division, faculty study the delicate environments and interplay between the land and the ocean. Still others investigate perhaps the most remarkable development of nature: the physical structure and workings of the human mind. Scientists in biology, microbiology and molecular genetics and molecular biology conduct research in cell and developmental biology. Neurochemists, neurophysiologists, psychobiologists and behavior biologists research the underlying mechanism of the neural basis of behavior.

Within this division are seven undergraduate majors ranging from biology to neuroscience; four interdepartmental programs, including cybernetics and women’s studies; and two centers/institutes and focused research units in cognitive science and marine science. Students in Life Sciences study in traditional majors as well as within specialized research programs of their own. Each year, more than 800 students complete one or more quarters of research in the Student Research Program, working with faculty in the College and the School of Medicine.
