At the core of a liberal arts education lie the Humanities; they promote disciplined reflection on the human condition and a sensitive and critical inquiry into how individuals in different times and places have understood themselves and their worlds. Within the Humanities are 16 departments, ranging from art history and the classics to Spanish and Portuguese and linguistics; eight interdepartmental programs that include folklore and mythology and the study of religion; and four centers.

Programs in the Humanities range from instruction in the craft of composition to the intensive study of language and its structure to examinations of the contributions of thinkers, writers and artists and their traditions from all over the world. Education in the Humanities provides a deep familiarity with concrete and culturally specific expressions of language, literature, philosophy and the arts. At the same time, the Humanities reveal how ideas, concerns and values may transcend the bounds of time and space. The faculty strive to further students’ knowledge and their ability to articulate their thoughts with clarity and imagination, thereby preparing students for productive, culturally rich lives as responsible, informed and humane citizens.
