The Graduate School of Education & Information Studies  (GSE&IS) is a community of learning and action.  Its members are scholars, practitioners, teachers, agenda setters and public intellectuals who research, teach and prepare practitioners and researchers in learning and information fields in an environment of multiple constituencies.  The shared goal is to enhance the life experience of all individuals through inquiry, professional practice and policy that lead to equitable access to quality education and useful information.

The School’s Department of Education and Department of Information Studies are both highly ranked among their peer institutions.  They offer outstanding graduate academic and professional programs that prepare students to become leaders in their fields.  Often using Los Angeles as a living laboratory, faculty are inspired by and respond to real-world challenges.  Education faculty are expert in such areas as urban education, student assessment and testing, educational technology, early childhood, higher education, and international and comparative education.  Information Studies faculty are expert in such areas as information retrieval systems, digital libraries and archives, and the information needs of children and diverse populations.

GSE&IS is home to a number of research centers, including the National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (CRESST) and the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI).  Additional centers that link research, instruction and service to K-12 schools include GSE&IS’ Center X and the Urban Education Studies Center.  Information and program centers include the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) Clearinghouse for Community Colleges and the Center for the Book.  The School also operates the Corinne A. Seeds University Elementary School, the country’s only university-based pre-kindergarten-through-sixth-grade laboratory school.

2000-'01 MILESTONES INCLUDE:
zpinbl.gif (960 bytes)  Enrollments in the Teacher Education Program and Principal Leadership Institute continued to increase.  The two departments of GSE&IS enrolled approximately 800 graduate students in degree programs and 2,000 undergraduate students in courses, marking the largest student population since 1994.  Further growth will result by 2010 in a 50% increase, compared to 1998, in both the undergraduate and the graduate student populations.
zpinbl.gif (960 bytes) The School surpassed last year’s amount of private gifts and grants received.  In 2000–2001, commitments toward the School’s Campaign UCLA goal totalled more than $5.5 million.
zpinbl.gif (960 bytes)  Among the largest contracts and grants at the School were $1 million from Microsoft to the School Management Program to establish a pilot community-based learning center at a local elementary school, approximately $8.5 million for research, testing and assessment projects at CRESST, and $800,000 to the All Campus Consortium on Research for Diversity (ACCORD), a University of California multi-campus research unit to study how policies and practices promote or inhibit access to higher education for diverse groups of students.
