     Despite its relative youth, the School ranks among the best of the nation's 52 dental schools in the federal funds received for research and is a leader in oral cancer, bone biology, wound healing, gene therapy, biomimotics and dental-health services research. The School also houses the Dental Research Institute, an organized research unit of the University of California and a focal point for multidisciplinary research in the health sciences.

     The School operates a 200-chair dental clinic on-campus, the Wilson-Jennings-Bloomfield UCLA Venice Dental Center, the UCLA/Roybal Children's Dental Center in East Los Angeles and the UCLA/USC Mobile Dental Clinic. At the Venice and Roybal clinics, low-cost comprehensive care is provided to low-income or indigent residents of Los Angeles. Patients visits for all clinics numbered approximately 83,545 last year.

2000-'01 MILESTONES INCLUDE:
    Representing a 10.9% increase over FY 1999-‘00, the faculty worked on grant-funded projects totalling $6.6 million (one-year budget).  The $6.6-million figure excludes the research money (1) funded to 14 dental school faculty who are teaching basic sciences and are located in the School of Medicine and (2) received for joint projects between the School of Dentistry and other campus department principal investigators.  Among the grants was the $1.1-million continuation grant from the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research for the UCLA-King/Drew Regional Research Center for Minority Oral Health, which enables the School to continue training minority researchers and conducting research on minority oral health care needs.
The School secured private donations of $2.6 million in FY 2000-‘01, thereby exceeding its seven-year Campaign UCLA goal of raising $10 million in private donations by June 2002.  Geraldine M. and Jack A. Weichman donated a significant sum to the School to provide an endowment for renovations to the endodontic clinic and other clinics.  In honor of their generosity, in May 2001, the School formally dedicated a portion of its third floor clinic area as the Weichman Endodontic Clinic.
   In the past few years, the Continuing Education Program has raised nearly $2 million to renovate the continuing education facility and student affairs office.  The renovation is scheduled to be completed by the end of calendar year 2001.
