The School of Public Policy and Social Research
was established in 1994 to set a new direction for policy education, research, and action. The School's distinctive approach emphasizes solving problems across boundaries-- political, cultural, national -- and particularly at those points where the public, private and non-profit sectors converge.

Although it is one of the country's newest policy programs, the School is also one of the largest, incorporating two distinguished UCLA units of long standing: the departments of Social Welfare and Urban Planning. Together with a vibrant new Department of Policy Studies, the School offers master's degrees in public policy, social welfare and urban planning, and doctoral degrees in social welfare and urban planning. It is also one of the few policy schools with a major commitment to undergraduate education, offering a popular minor in public policy. The School houses 10 active research centers -- including the Lewis Center for Regional Policy Studies, the Center for Policy Research on Aging and the Center for International Science, Technology and Cultural Policy -- which address such issues as immigration impacts, Social Security reform and the influence of government policy on the arts and sciences.

The School's chief outreach program, the UCLA Policy Forum, acts both as a catalyst for dialogue on critical issues and as a leader in training and other programs that draw on the expertise of the entire UCLA campus to improve the performance of public, private and nonprofit organizations.

1999-‘00 MILESTONES INCLUDE:
zpinbl.gif (960 bytes)  More than 300 policy-makers, scholars, business people and community leaders from 33 countries gathered for the groundbreaking Global City-Regions Conference, which was mounted by the School in October, 1999. World Bank President James Wolfensohn delivered the opening address at the Getty Center to an audience that included mayors of the world’s largest cities.
zpinbl.gif (960 bytes) The School announced its Inaugural Advisory Board, which includes more than two dozen national and international leaders from the public, private and nonprofit sectors. Members include a former governor, a sitting senator, the chief executives of major corporations and national nonprofit organizations, as well as a university president.
zpinbl.gif (960 bytes)  The School received a $1.69-million anonymous gift to support a new program focusing on leadership and management of nonprofit and community-based organizations. This interdisciplinary program examines the contributions of the nonprofit sector in building strong democracies, and seeks to improve nonprofit management and programming.
