Since its inception as the College of Engineering in 1945, the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science has been on the cutting-edge of technological advances.

In addition to its strengths in such traditional engineering programs as aerospace, electrical engineering and computer science, the School is advancing research in the evolving fields of wireless communications and networking, micromachines, smart materials, earthquake analysis and biomedical engineering.

The School continues to attract outstanding faculty members and exceptional students from around the world and offers more than 30 academic and professional degree programs as well as an interdepartmental graduate degree in biomedical engineering. The curriculum encompasses basic science and also includes significant exposure to the humanities, social sciences and fine arts to educate students about their responsibility to create, protect and manage technology with regard for ethics, human values and social benefit.

Researchers led by Computer Science Professor Richard Muntz made major advances in the creation of “Virtual Los Angeles,” a computer-based model of the city that incorporates videos, satellite images, photos, computer graphics and other vivid three-dimensional images to provide smooth spatial and temporal access to information organized geographically. The interactive database holds the potential for a wide range of applications, including medical research and health care, education, urban planning and emergency response management. Virtual Los Angeles is supported by the National Science Foundation as a key component of the Virtual World Server Data Project.
zpinbl.gif (960 bytes) Civil Engineering Professor and Chairman Professor Jiann-Wen Ju, Assistant Professor Jonathan P. Stewart and Associate Professor John W. Wallace served on international reconnaissance teams following the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Taiwan. The extensive information they collected promises to add immensely to scientific knowledge about the nature of earthquakes and their impact on buildings, bridges and other structures. Professors Stewart and Wallace are currently conducting research on the seismic effects of earthquake-type movements on freeway bridge columns. Their findings will have help guide future freeway design and construction.
zpinbl.gif (960 bytes)   Computer Science Professor Deborah Estrin and her colleagues have made significant strides in wireless network sensors, which hold broad and profound opportunities for scientific discovery. Potential applications include environmental monitoring. Sensor networks promise to revolutionize this process by enabling the collection of larger and more frequent measures of soil, air and marine water conditions that have a powerful impact on the quality of life.
