     The excellent faculty, breadth of curriculum, and access to one of the largest legal communities in the nation make the School a top choice for students throughout the country seeking a quality legal education. The Hugh and Hazel Darling Law Library, which opened in fall 1998, successfully integrates modern technology with the best of traditional library design. The school offers a three-year curriculum leading to the Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree. Also offered is a one-year graduate law program (Master of Laws) designed exclusively for graduates of foreign law schools. The school is a pioneer in clinical legal education and its faculty are leaders in clinical scholarship and the teaching of lawyering skills.  The Business Program, the International and Comparative Law Program, and the Program in Public Interest Law and Policy offer students the opportunity to concentrate in a specific area of law study.  Students may also choose from four-year joint-degree programs in Business, American Indian Studies, Social Welfare, Urban Planning, Public Policy, and African American Studies (approval pending).

1999-‘00 MILESTONES INCLUDE:
    With the participation of Chancellor Carnesale, three of its former deans, and former White House Chief of Staff and Congressman Leon Panetta, and more than 500 guests, the UCLA School of Law celebrated its fiftieth anniversary and formally dedicated the expanded and renovated Hugh and Hazel Darling Library -- a new campus landmark.
  Among the many honors garnered by members of the Law School this year, former Dean Susan Prager '71 received the Edward A. Dickson Alumnus of the Year Award, Frank Menetrez '00  received the UCLA Graduate Student of the Year Award, and Law Professor David Sklansky and Law Lecturer Tom Holm each received the UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award.
   Two major gifts in support of a new comprehensive, multidisciplinary UCLA Center for Environmental Law were received.  The family of Luanne Wells, after whose late husband the Frank G. Wells Environmental Law Clinic is named, donated $1-million to endow a chair in his name. The Evan Frankel Foundation contributed $1-million to establish the Evan Frankel Environmental Law and Policy Program and offered another $1-million in the form of a matching grant.
    An endowment in support of an Annual Ann C. Rosenfield Symposium was directed by David Leveton '62.  It supported the inaugural Annual Corporate Governance Conference and in the future will support other distinguished symposia.
