The Graduate School of Education & Information Studies (GSE&IS) is dedicated to developing models and strategies leading to new knowledge about learning, teaching and the various forms and organization of information and peoples relation to it. Its goal is to improve the capacity of all individuals to understand the world through equitable access to quality education and useful information. The school’s Department of Education and Department of Information Studies are both highly ranked among their peer institutions. They offer outstanding graduate academic and professional programs that prepare students to become leaders in their fields. Often using Los Angeles as a living laboratory, faculty are inspired by and respond to real-world challenges. Education faculty are expert in such areas as urban education, student assessment and testing, educational technology, early childhood, higher education, and international and comparative education. Information Studies faculty are expert in such areas as information retrieval systems, digital libraries and archives, and the information needs of children and diverse populations. GSE&IS is home to a number of research centers, including the National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (CRESST) and the Higher Education Research Institute. In January 2000, the school officially welcomed both the California Center for the Book, which partners with libraries to promote reading and the study of book arts, print, and electronic culture, and the Pacific Bell/UCLA Initiative for 21st Century Literacies, which examines the meaning of literacy in today’s environment of rapidly changing technologies, new and unfiltered information, and increasing diversity. GSE&IS also operates the Corinne A. Seeds University Elementary School, the country’s only university-based pre-kindergarten-through-sixth-grade laboratory school. |
